Reviving M&S might be the management challenge too far – besides which, it would undoubtedly face a competition problem given M&S’s 3 per cent share of the national groceries market. As for Archie and Knutsford, well maybe, but still it seems a trifle implausible. Kingfisher would certainly love to do it, but has it got the management? It was partly to address this problem that it bid for Asda, only to be outgunned by Wal-Mart, and it is not at all clear what it would bring to the party at M&S.Tesco already has its work cut out defending its own brand, not to mention its overseas expansion programme. But there are any number of reasons for thinking that this is yet another false dawn for M&S shares Take the market favourites to bid. To this slate ought to be added a fourth possibility – a financial purchaser – such is the perceived scope for gearing up M&S’s balance sheet. In these markets anything is possible, and a hostile bid certainly should not be discounted altogether. Not even M&S’s bland assertion yesterday that it knew of no reason for the sudden share price movement dented optimism much; the shares largely hung on to their gains. Now, it is often the case that the target company is the last to know of the predator waiting in the bushes, ready to strike, and it is this, rather than renewed confidence in trading prospects, that has really captured the market’s imagination. As our news story opposite reports, there are three obvious candidates – Kingfisher, jilted at the altar by Asda in favour of Wal-Mart; Asda’s former boss, Archie Norman; and Tesco. Wage inflation will add to inflationary pressure and take some of the steam out of Wall Street.

History adds force to the argument – stock markets might enjoy the first fruits of great technological advances, but the new prosperity leads to a distributional tussle So it’s champagne for “the people” to see in the year 2000.. IS IT FINALLY time to buy Marks & Spencer? Hope springs eternal when it comes to the fabled St Michael, and Britain’s new model army of private investors reckons it is. M&S is still such a powerful brand, the thinking goes, and its shares have so plainly been oversold, that eventually it must recover Either that, or someone will bid for it. It scarcely needs repeating that this was being said a year ago, six months ago, even three months ago, and every time the price has gone lower still. Indeed, it has been said all the way from the peak two years ago, when the shares were still trading at more than 650p.
But, with the price up more than 20 per cent over the last two days, on gigantic volume, there is now plainly a real head of steam behind the belief that the company has finally hit bottom. What’s more, until the past year or two almost all the increase in wages went to the higher paid, as income inequality widened.

It defies belief that this will continue for another decade. The point is approaching when corporate America will have to increase employees’ pay at the expense of profit growth. Over the course of the decade of the 1990s wages in the US have risen by 50 per cent and profits by 100 per cent, and the Dow Jones average has risen by 300 per cent. While a small number of workers have tasted the fruits of the stock market and profits booms, thanks to stock option schemes, the vast majority have not. A trend improvement in productivity does not abolish the business cycle. Growth will eventually slow, if only because the Federal Reserve will have to react to rising inflation.

The lowest of the three ascending terraces measures roughly 210m by 190m, and its corridors are lined for hundreds of metres with exquisite bas-reliefs depicting, among other things, episodes from the Hindu ramayana, battle scenes and depictions of the last judgement. Although experts believe Angkor was probably never entirely abandoned, the jungle claimed its temples of stone and brick (reserved for the gods) and its palaces of wood (for human use) All but fragments of the wood have vanished. But there is much more besides: an architecture, sometimes of labyrinthine complexity, more often of a grace and rectangular geometrical precision to take the breath away; and a romantic history of empire, decline, rediscovery, and restoration interrupted in the 1970s by the nightmare of the Khmer Rouge interlude. The city of Angkor was for centuries the centre of a great Khmer empire, eventually defeated by the Thais in 1431 The court withdrew further south. These were built between the ninth and 12th centuries, at a time when Europe was creating little to compare with the ubiquitous graceful apsaras or dancing girls, the friezes commemorating scenes from the Hindu epics, the gigantic heads at Bayon.

It also includes monumental walls, moats, reservoirs, gates and towers. The long and difficult journey to the middle of Cambodia would be worthwhile just to marvel at the sculptures and reliefs that decorate the towers, exteriors and galleries of the temples. The main site, spread over some 80 square miles, includes about 40 temples, monasteries and terraces in varying states of preservation, forming an ensemble with few, if any, parallels on the planet. A two- centre holiday embracing Angkor and Phuket would indeed be a blend of the sacred and fairly profane. However you approach the place, it is important to know that there is far more to Angkor than the famous wat and its lotus-bud towers which ornament Cambodia’s national flag. It’s a good way to end a day at Angkor, especially if earlier you have climbed one of the vertiginous 70-degree staircases which lead to the topmost of the three levels of the wat (or temple); by so doing, you have scaled a copy of the Mount Meru of Hindu mythology and reached the centre of the universe. As night falls you can contemplate the scale of your achievement.
That accomplishment becomes easier from this month, with a new flight linking the site with both Bangkok and the Thai resort of Phuket.

It’s as if the surrounding jungle which had swallowed the stupendous building for hundreds of years is once again invading the ruins. “Better rugby leads to a better national team, which in turn leads to more supporters and greater viability for the clubs.”. At dusk, when the noise of the cicadas on the temple mountain of Phnom Bakheng fuses into a single screeching whistle, you can see, a mile away, the five towers of Angkor Wat vanishing into the shadows. Sale and Leeds might conceivably do something similar to provide a showcase for club rugby in the north.
“We’re not excluding anyone from the process,” insisted the chairman in an effort to soothe the righteous anger of the current Allied Dunbar Premiership Two clubs, who are mortified at the prospect of being denied promotion opportunities for five ring-fenced years. “To get a superleague franchise, applicants will need to come up with a £1m bond and meet various criteria concerning stadia, financial probity and community involvement. We don’t know how many clubs will come up with that sort of money, or who they will be.
